The George Ranch offers basic and advanced blacksmithing classes for industrious folks who want to try metalworking with a coal-burning forge.
Geared for beginners with little or no metal-working experience, this skills-oriented blacksmithing class will teach students about maintaining fires, shop safety, tools, equipment and basic forging skills, including drawing out, twisting, forge welding, punching and scroll work. Students will finish small items to take home. Participants must wear cotton or wool clothing (no synthetic materials) and closed-toe shoes.
The cost of materials is included in the class fee. Students also must bring their own eye and ear protection, as well as a sack lunch and water bottle. All blacksmithing classes are a single 7-hour class with a lunch break.
This 7-hour continuation course will help participants progress further in blacksmithing skills and practice. Topics include forge use and care, heat treating, annealing, quenching, normalization and tempering. Students will make a project to take home. Students must wear cotton or wool clothing (no synthetic materials) and closed-toe shoes. The cost of materials is included in the class fee. This class is open only to participants who have attended the Traditional Blacksmithing Skills I class or have previous forging experience.
