Tales of Texas: Texas Icons – Homeschool Day

This year for Tales of Texas, come to the Ranch to meet the men and women who became icons in Texas history.

Cast of Characters & Ongoing Activities:

1830s Jones Stock Farm

10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

William Barret Travis, popularly known as an Alamo hero and for penning the famous “VICTORY or DEATH” letter that served as a rallying cry for Texians after the battle, spent some time traveling the Texian colony collecting debts for private citizens prior to 1836. Come see his visit to the Jones Stock Farm and discover the interesting ways that he spent his commissions from these collections. First-person characters at this site include William Barret Travis and Emily D. West.

 

1860s Ryon Prairie Home

11:30 a.m. & 2 p.m.

The Civil War left Texas flush with cattle and the growing United States lacking in supply. Witness Charles Goodnight negotiating a cattle drive contract as he prepares for the inaugural use of the “Goodnight-Loving Trail” in 1866 and the birth of the cattle drive era. First-person characters at this site include Henrietta King, Charles Goodnight and William Marsh Rice.

 

1890s Davis Victorian Mansion

Ongoing All Day

First-person characters at this site include Jane McCallum and Clara Driscoll. There will also be additional presentations on the Texas Suffragette Movement.

 

1930s George Ranch Home

Ongoing All Day

First-person characters at this site include Henrietta Deuell and Bonnie Parker.
