RICHMOND – Make historical memories this spring break at the George Ranch Historical Park! Explore more than 100 years of Texas history March 12 and 15-19 with costumed interpreters, historic home tours, historic meals, hands-on activities, demonstrations and more!

“Spring break is one of our favorite weeks here at the Park,” said Director of Programs Krystal Willeby. “The energy, the excitement and the familial connection is on full display during spring break. We tell a family story, so we love it when we can tell that story to whole families.”

Since spring was such a critical time in pioneer and farming life, Willeby said, all activities were planned to recognize and embrace the tasks, chores and fun that historically accompanied the season.

Special Spring Break Activities:

  • 1830s Jones Stock Farm: Tour the dog-trot log cabin and help “Henry Jones” plow and plant the spring garden. Help with other chores on the farmstead, such as lining chicken boxes and carrying water.
  • 1860s Ryon Prairie Home: Tour the historic home and learn how to make cheese and churn butter with “Mrs. Polly Ryon.”
  • 1890s Davis Victorian Mansion: Tour the family’s original Victorian home, watch the blacksmith in action, plant seedlings at the greenhouse, learn about “flying” cowboys and help “Uncle Bob” feed the livestock.
  • 1930s George Home and Cattle Complex: Tour the original turn-of-the-century home built by renowned Galveston architect Nicholas Clayton, practice wood branding, watch cattle demonstrations, blow bubbles and participate in Treehouse Story time at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Heritage Trail: Play nature trail games every day at noon along the Park’s Heritage Trail.

Spring Break Barbecue:

A special spring break barbecue will be held every day March 12 and 15-19 at 12:30 p.m. Menu includes smoked ham, chopped beef, Mexican yam salad (jicama slaw ), roasted potato salad with cotija, warm charro beans, pickled beets, okra, onions, buns, bread and assorted cobblers. Cost for the barbecue is $14 for adults, $11 for children ages five to 15 and $4 for children four and under.
